Toshi Shimizu

Toshi Shimizu (1887 - 1945) was active/lived in New York / Japan.  Toshi Shimizu is known for Painting.

The following information was submitted in April 2006 by David Martin:

Born in Japan, Toshi Shimizu arrived in Seattle in 1907.  He studied with the Dutch immigrant artist Fokko Tadama (1871-1937) who had established an art school in Seattle around 1914.  He gained recognition in Seattle as a promising young painter and won awards with the Seattle Fine Arts Society. He moved to New York around 1919 and studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design.  In New York he exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists from 1919-1924 and the Salons of America in 1922.  He also exhibited in 1921 at the Chicago Art Institute.
In 1924, Shimizu moved to Paris to study and further his career.  His Seattle friend, Yasushi Tanaka had moved to Paris in 1920 where he received favorable recognition.  Shimizu exhibited at the prestigious  Salon d'Automne in 1924.
